Analysis of Magazine Advertisements

Gwen Stefani - Love, Angel, Music Baby

The main music artists is featured on the advert as well as the name of the album, artist and some songs on the CD.

The design appeals to the audience because it's bright and colourful. The music artist look glamorous because she is sitting on a thrown with a crown which represents her having power.

The CD cover, Advert and music video's. Her music video 'What you waiting for' which is featured in this advert is a music video which is imaginary and fantasy. By her advert and album cover being quite blurry but also as if this album could reflect to a part in her life being a blur.

Katy Perry - Teenage Dream

The advert shows the image of the music artist, the name of the artist and the date the CD comes out.

The image is dark but the artist stands out in bright colours and costume. The location which the artist is based looks quite dark maybe linking to the name of the album being 'Teenage Dream' and the location being like a teenagers room.

Katy Perry has always been an artist which stands out in her dress sense in her music videos.

The background in the music video looks like an 90s throwback which she dreamt of when she was a teenager.

This advert would show that most pop artists who advertise their music video or CD have a similar costume in each of their adverts and either use the same image in different ways or have a similar image but its in either in a different set or location.

Marina & The Diamonds - The Family Jewels

On this advert it doesn't necessarily say when the album comes out however it does have some new singles and reviews.

The design is bold but also very photo shopped by the face that the music artist is placed in front of a floral pattern. The artist stands out more because the other colours on the page are pastel colours and are very light in comparison to the artist.

The name of the album stands out in bold white writing as well as the artist which would be one of the first things the audience would spot in the advert.

This advert has reviews on the bottom of the page which allows the audience to see what other people thought of the album and may allow them to see what the album is like and to see if that could influence their decision even more.

Looking at the CD cover, Magazine advert and music video for these that the artist is using similar CD artwork and magazine adverts in each. Then in her music videos, e.g. in Shampain in her album The Family Jewels she sets the scene in a sad location with lit candles and mascara falling of her face.

Treatment of ‘Everything Lies’ by Amanda Kaletsky

The genre of my music video is pop, however some aspects of the song includes soul.

In my music video I plan to use a girl either playing the guitar or walking in the woods and including some aspects of performance based music video too. Another idea for the music video is to have her on a bike cycling along the road.

I’ll probably cut between locations of where the girl (model) is heading and allow her true emotions to show either by showing her crying as if she’s been hurt or her showing anger as if she was angry.

The song is clearly describing somebody in particular, so my aim is to include shots of another model who she is singing about.

The location of the video will be in a quiet location because the song is very soft.

Analysis of Digi-Packs

 Nirvana - Nevermind

The genre of this album is Rock. The main features on the album cover is a naked baby reaching for a dollar. Having a baby reaching for the dollar could symbolize how people live their lives round money and wealth.

The band name 'Nirvana - Nevermind' is is placed in the darker part of the album cover which could mean that its a 'deep' album or the songs in the album have a very strong meaning.

I like the texture on the CD being rough but also continuing the music theme throughout including on the back of the cover.

The image on the back looks like a bomb which could symbolize anger or the album is 'explosive'.

Pussycat Dolls - PCD
The genre for this cover is pop. The main focus in this cover is that they are a all female pop group but that there is also a main singer who is in the middle.

The group have their own unique logo 'pcd'. The artists all look happy in the picture and also have a sense of mysteriousness.

The booklet makes them look more 'pop' and 'hip', by doing this it makes the group more attractive to a younger audience.

By them having two images in the cover 'black and white' this could also show them as having a 'good and bad' side. They also have pages to introduce the music artists in the group.

Radiohead - the bends

On this cover there is one main image of a man, he's looking unwell because he has glints of yellow, he has bits of metal on him which could link to his expression and that he is in either pain or in a sigh of relief.

The design is dark, the man on the front is iconic.

The album being this way could be that the band is going through some pain or relief or either linking to drugs and 'the bands' linking to drugs.

The inside is very colourful in comparison to the CD which is very plain and simple, the back has lots of colour too.

Song Choice!

After a lot of thinking I have finally come to a conclusion!

I have chosen 'Everything Lies by Amanda Kaletsky ' I like the song because it shows a mixture of genres but still represents pop.

A variety of songs which I have found always seem to have other genres which I believe really is pop.

The musician singing is a girl so I would ideally like to use a girl.

Audience Research

A Recent task which we have been given is to explore our target audience to see what they like!

I did start this research by filming interviews however due to problems with editing I was unable to complete this more fun way of doing target audience research.

We asked our target audience a number of questions asking them about they like to see in a music video.

The audience I asked were aged around 17-18 year olds. I did find that there was a pattern in the style of music they were in to and that it is far off pop music!

I put some data together from what the target audience had said in the survey:

  • More people never go to music gigs although most people said they enjoy going to music festivals more than going to concerts.
  • The majority of people used the internet the most to find new music, YouTube was a favourite when it came to which website they used. The social media is also another way of finding music.
  • They access their music by using Spotify or iTunes mostly however YouTube is a significant way of getting music too. Some also mentioned hearing about new music from friends and family.
  • Most people said that they play their music through either their laptops or iPod's.
  • There is a diversity of what they said was their favourite music genre was such as; Rock, Indie, R&B, Jazz, Reggae, House, Alternative, Rap and Folk. The most popular result was Jazz and R&B.
  • They also said what features would encourage them to buy a song from the music video. Mostly they said it would have to be creative, Funny, Interesting, Exciting and most importantly being a good song!
  • I found out that more people prefer Narrative and Concept rather than a performance based music video partly because they find it boring to see music artists 'dancing around'.
  • I also asked people which they preferred not to see in a music video, most people said anything dull that doesn't interest you from he beginning and violence and animal cruelty was one answer too.
After I also asked about what particular music video they liked recently...

Jack - Breach

A reason why one person liked this music video was because they liked how the hair moves places in time with the beat.

Holiday - Greenday

The interviewee liked the car sequence in this music video.

Waiting all Night - Rudimental
(No proper reason just liked it)

From this research I have found that this isn't the right age group I need to be targeting for Pop Music as no-one mentioned pop music, i'll possibly need a younger age group. However I will consider what I gathered from this survey towards my music portfolio!

Unknown Music Artist's Found!

I have been doing some research to find music video's by less well known artists..

Where Wolf - Ginger & The Ghost

I like how different this music video is and the costumes and props stand out, it also helps spring to my mind about festivals and the colours and outfits which people wear to festivals.

Love Sounds - Miracle Bell

I like the song mostly that is certainly one thing I can say about the music video... but yet I have more to say! I like how the music video is very simple although its performance based they still made it appealing by using bikes and an unusual setting which I believe is an airplane runway? I also like how they split screens on the band/group so you had more to look at.

Both video's are performance based and I like them both however after looking in this direction I have found doing a music video purely based on performance and not on narrative or concept it makes me want to look in those options more for my music video!

Britney Spears

Firstly a little Intro To Britney Spears...

Britney Spears waas born 2nd December 1981. She's an american music artist. She became more famous by auditioning on The Mickey Mouse Club but unfortunately too young to join but soon enough got recognised ata young age by a talent agent.

I'm having a look at how Britney has changed in her style and performance in her music video's. I think personally that Britney Spears is more well known for her pop music.

Here is a collage of photo's of Britney in various of her music videos.

Toxic - Britney Spears

In this music video Britney is being represented sexually in this music video but that is exactly how she wants to be seen, it's what her publicist would like her to be represented.

Similar to other music artists, I do like the idea of the music artist changing their costumes in the music video.
